Outdoor Cinema in Jamaica: Everything You Actually Want to Know

If you've seen a photo of a movie screen glowing on somebody's lawn in Portmore and thought "wait, how does that work?", this one's for you.

Private outdoor cinema has quietly become one of the most requested event formats on the island. Not a drive-in. Not a cinema you travel to. A whole cinema setup that turns up at your address, gets built in your yard, runs for your guests only, and is gone by morning.

So what is it, really

A crew shows up at your place about two hours before your start time. They build a freestanding projection screen, set up an HD projector, lay out seating, and get the lighting going. Every guest gets a pair of wireless headphones.

When the film starts, everybody hears it perfectly. Your neighbours hear absolutely nothing.

That last bit throws most people, so let's be clear about it: a modern outdoor cinema is completely silent to anybody who isn't wearing the headphones. No speakers. Nothing carrying over the fence.

Where can you actually put one

Almost anywhere reasonably level that we can get to.

Front lawns and back yards are the usual. Rooftops are great. We've worked with paved yards, driveways, villa lawns, school fields, church grounds, community centres. We lay decorative flooring (grass or rubber, your pick) across the seating area, so concrete or patchy ground isn't a dealbreaker.

What you need to sort out on your side is small: let us in about two hours early, have a working power point, have internet, and provide tables and chairs if you're feeding people.

What it costs

We publish our prices, which is rarer than it should be in this business.

Cinema Setup Package, $30,000 flat. Projector, screen, silent headphones for everyone, battery powered site lighting, delivery, installation, and full pull down at the end.

Cinema Experience, $3,000 per guest. Premium seat with cushion and blanket, freshly made popcorn, prop movie tickets, movie night décor, and decorative flooring.

So 15 guests works out to $30,000 plus $45,000, which is $75,000. Minimum booking is 10 guests.

Add ons are separate and totally optional. Red carpet, unlimited popcorn with a server, extra hours, personalised décor.

What can you watch

Anything you can stream or buy digitally that night, signed into your own account. What we can't do is a film that's still only showing in cinemas. So if there's a specific new release you've got your heart set on, ask us before you lock in the date rather than after.

Who books these

Birthdays, by a mile. But we've done anniversaries, proposals, gender reveals, graduations, staff appreciation nights, church youth events, school fundraisers, family reunions, and villa guest experiences.

The thread running through all of them is the same: a group of people who want to be outside together after dark without shouting over music.

Why this works so well here

Honestly? The weather. Most of the year, Jamaican evenings are the best part of the day. Warm, breezy, dry. The countries that invented this format have to plan around winter. We don't.

There's history here too. Jamaica had a proper outdoor cinema culture long before anybody called it a trend, and plenty of people still remember it. We wrote about that separately if you're curious.

The honest downsides

Rain is the real one. You need either a covered fallback or a reschedule plan sorted out in advance, and we'd rather agree that when you book than argue about it on the afternoon.

Ground matters. Very steep or badly uneven ground limits what we can build safely. And if the only way to reach your setup spot is up a flight of stairs, that carries an extra charge, so tell us early.

The 10 guest minimum is also real. Below that, the crew and equipment cost us the same as they would for thirty people, which is why smaller bookings get quoted individually instead.
