How It Works

Rain, Mosquitoes and Nosy Neighbours: The Honest Answers

Guests watching a film at a back yard outdoor cinema in Jamaica at night

People raise the same five worries. All of them are fair. Here are honest answers.

"What happens if it rains?"

The real one, and the one without a perfect answer.

We can't run in heavy rain. Equipment and safety both rule it out.

What you do about it is agree a plan in advance instead of improvising on the day. Usually that's one of two things. Either a covered area at your venue we can move to, or a reschedule arrangement sorted out at booking.

The mistake is leaving it until the afternoon, when you're already stressed and making decisions under pressure. Sort it when you book.

Practically speaking, Jamaican evenings are dry most of the year and short showers usually pass. The genuinely risky window is peak hurricane season, and that's worth thinking about when you pick a date.

"Won't my neighbours complain?"

Not about the film, no.

Every guest wears wireless silent headphones. There's no loudspeaker in the setup at all. Somebody standing the other side of your fence hears nothing from the screening, which means finishing at 11pm in a residential area isn't a problem.

Your guests arriving and talking is a separate thing, and normal courtesy applies. But the thing that would usually cause a complaint, film audio blasting outdoors at night, simply doesn't exist here.

"Mosquitoes are going to eat us"

They will, if you do nothing about it.

This is the most underestimated issue at Jamaican outdoor events, because your guests are sitting still, outside, after dark, for around two hours. Perfect conditions.

Treat the area earlier in the day. Coils, citronella, or a proper spray of the bush around the yard in the afternoon. Blankets come with every seat, which helps more than people expect.

Solvable, but it's your job, and it needs doing before guests arrive rather than after the first complaint.

"My yard isn't nice enough"

Almost always wrong, this one.

Decorative flooring, grass or rubber, goes across the whole seating area as part of the standard package. It covers concrete, paving, patchy grass, rough ground. Put that together with the seating and the site lighting and the setup transforms whatever space it sits in.

What actually matters isn't how pretty your yard is. It's whether the ground is reasonably level, whether there's enough depth for the screen, and whether we can get equipment there without carrying it up stairs.

Send us a short video when you enquire. We'll tell you honestly whether it works.

"Is the power bill going to be huge?"

No. And our site lighting runs on its own battery power rather than off your supply.

You provide one working power point. That's the whole requirement.

Just test it before the day.

The one nobody asks about

Internet.

Streaming needs a stable connection at the setup spot, which is often the far end of a yard where household wifi is weakest. Test the signal where we'll actually be, not from your sofa. If it's weak, get an extender or download the film in advance.

This causes more last minute stress than rain does, and it's completely preventable a week earlier.
